Let’s Have More Fun Together!

Fun Ways to Kickstart your Family’s New Year!

Start your New Year off Together!

Starting the New Year with your loved ones can be as simple as spending quality time together. We’ve listed some of our favorite things happening this first week of January to enjoy with your family – include cousins, aunts, and grandparents too – the fun is for everyone!

Starting New Year’s Day – take a Hike! With New York City Parks that is! On Tuesday, January 1, 2019 – Urban Park Rangers will be hosting FREE “New Year’s Day Hike” at various parks across the five boroughs. The hikes are described as “light” or a “leisurely stroll on mostly paved paths” and it is recommended that you dress warmly with hiking shoes. Van Cortlandt Park in The Bronx will begin their hike at 11 am, or you can visit Fort Tryon Park near Inwood at 1 pm to join their hike, each event lasting approximately an hour and a half. More fun later on New Year’s Day! JCC Harlem has open play for 4 to 10 year olds starting at 12 noon. The cost is $10 per child and is a great opportunity to meet new neighbors, or arrange a play date with friends! And on Wednesday, the JCC will host an Afternoon movie for the kiddos. The kid friendly movie will be shown afterschool for ages 4 to 10. For more information, and to register for any of these events, click HERE.

Celebrating Ephipany this year? Better known Uptown as Three Kings Day – this annual celebration kicks off with a Parade at El Museo del Barrio. This is a great way to spend time with everyone in your family regardless of age! The parade will span approximately 10 blocks with performances afterwards at the Museum. learn more about the parade and the Museum HERE.

Continue to celebrate El Día De Los Reyes by spending Saturday afternoon at The Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling. On January 5, the museum will observe what it means to be a Global Citizen by exploring how Three Kings Day is celebrated all around the world. There will be crafts using lots of gold, and making crowns as well as a Story Hour performance. To learn more about what promises to be a joyful afternoon, click HERE.

Wave Hill begins the New Year by looking forward! The Family Project for the first weekend of the New Year is a “Create your Year” activity. Embrace the circle of time by creating a calendar highlighting your favorite aspects of each season. Wave Hill hosts FREE Family Art Project almost every weekend. For more information and to view other events at this lovely space, click HERE.

BONUS ACTIVITY! Start a gratitude Journal with your family! Adults and children too can take some time each day to express what they are grateful for. My daughter and I use the Growing in Gratitude Journal by Author Alex Elle, (Find it HERE) and we color, use stamps and whatever else to create each entry. You can also purchase any blank journal or use a composition notebook! It does not have to be fancy, but working together in that way brings a unique reward of togetherness. What’s important is spending time together.
